By September 28, 2007No Comments

Science Museum in London is re-advertising a position as exhibition curator for history of medical science and clinical medicine. Application dead-line is 12 October. Here’s the job description:

Based in the Curatorial Team, your main role will be to develop world-class exhibitions, galleries, websites and publications. You must be able to research and deliver outputs across a range of media engaging with a variety of audiences; this will entail the ability to write in different registers to suit different audiences. You will also work with our Development team to ensure that funding is secured for these projects. With good knowledge of the history and current state of medicine and experience of working with museum objects, you will have a commitment to developing and communicating knowledge of the history of medicine and its associated material culture. You should be able to demonstrate experience of, or capacity for, good collecting practice [discrimination in selection – within collecting policy – of objects, and assessing their usability for storytelling], and your excellent teamworking skills will be supported by your ability to deal confidently with people at all levels. We are looking for an individual with a broad understanding of the history of modern medicine (post 1750), especially its clinical and/or laboratory aspects, and the capacity to grasp and interpret recent and current medical trends. You should be able to work with contextual understanding to represent these subjects effectively at a level that would normally be represented by a Masters degree in a relevant discipline: history of science, technology, etc. Candidates with alternative, or greater, qualifications will be considered. This role might well suit an individual with a sound academic understanding of these subjects who has a desire to communicate that knowledge to wide audiences.

To apply, email CV and covering letter to: recruittrading@nmsi.ac.uk (reference CUR/MED07 on the email subject line). For further information and a full job description, see www.sciencemuseum.org.uk/vacancies.
